summer garden 2018

Another summer garden round up! This year a chipmunk ate all of my sunflower seeds (twice) so we didn't have sunflowers this year. so bummed! We also bought and tried out a soaker hose and switched sides of what we planted where.

The boys love for Chad to give them any task with the garden. Before we planted he told them that "turning up" the dirt would be good for our raised bed and they loved playing in the dirt each day. Then he had them put tums and epsom salt around the base of our tomato plants. They love helping him!
Our iris bed went crazy this year! Mom gave them to us a few years ago and they were so thick and tall this year.
This year we got our tomatoes in late April, but didn't get everything else in until May 5.
May 14- our backyard bunnies love checking things out :) but they've never messed with it at all in the past. This year they did top our okra and eat the bottom of our beans.

I loaded up some of my plants and took them to Will and Kim while we were gone for 10 days.

"ball! ball!"
I love how plants climb!

Basil is by far our most used herb. We load our tomato pies and zucchini pies up! Miller loves to pull each of the plants and then bring us the leaves to smell. He especially loves pulling the mint because it gets so full.
We got tons of cucumbers this year and eat them daily. The boys have loved them! We've done several different things with them. The boys especially loved helping and eating this recipe for a cucumber salad that my family loves from my great grandmother.
This has also, once again, been the summer of tomato pie. We've made 2-3 each week.

summer garden 2017

This was our third year to plant a summer garden here. The garden is all Chad and I love how much he enjoys it. I love watching it grow and watching the yard turn green as the days get warmer. This year our tomatoes did so much better than other years and we even got a few ears of corn for the first time. We've eaten many a zucchini pie, tomato pie (this recipe... but we don't use a pre-baked pie crust) and tomato sandwich this summer!

We planted: zucchini, squash, cucumbers, green peppers, corn, tomatoes, okra

March- new dirt/prepping the box

We love teaching the boys and love seeing them get excited about the plants growing. Chad's been really good about letting them help and teaching them. Grayson has gotten so excited when he finds stuff ready to be picked this year.
The tomato below was HUGE. Pictures don't really do it justice. It looked like 4 tomatoes put together. Chad thought it was funny because it was bigger than Miller's head.
The sunflowers were really fun again this year. We had some that got SO tall.
Chad is 6'1" and they were taller than the boys standing on his shoulders. The boys loved this :)
Some sweaty boys dissecting a sunflower and getting the seeds out.
Grayson enjoyed taking his scissors out and cutting flowers to bring in.
