cardboard headboard

We have such a hodge podge of furniture all over our house. It's been such a blessing that we haven't had to spend much money buying pieces. Our guest room (and Bowen's current room) is no exception and I got comfortable with what was in there and haven't given it any thought since we moved in. Everything in there was given to us!
I saw a picture of this Pottery Barn headboard, and I liked that it was neutral and didn't take up much space. Our guest room isn't huge, so we don't need a big bed frame. I thought a simple headboard would add a lot to the wall space and give the bed a more complete look.
But y'all. I can't ever imagine spending that much money on something like this. Like ever. My budget for a headboard was along the lines of the cheaper, the better

I saw where people make headboards out of a piece of plywood, but that still was more than I wanted to spend (1 piece of plywood is not that expensive). We got a big cardboard box and decided to try using that instead.

It is all fairly janky underneath, but I like how it turned out :)
We duct taped a few pieces of cardboard together to thicken it up.
Added a little batting.
I used one big paint drop cloth from Wal-Mart to cover the whole thing.
this was sometime in February... it was colder then :)

Cardboard- free
Canvas drop cloth- $10
Batting- $5
Nailhead trim- $10 (50% off at Hobby Lobby)
1x4 posts- $3

 Not bad for under $30
